Championing Inclusion Through Adapted Sports: A Collaborative Effort by Sports Richmond, VA and Tempe Tourism

In today’s rapidly evolving world, the commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is not just an option but a necessity. Sports Richmond, VA and Tempe Tourism champion these values through every initiative, with a particular focus on adapted sports. As leaders in the sports tourism industry, we recognize the profound impact that sports can have in fostering inclusivity and breaking down barriers.

Our dedication to DEIA is exemplified through our co-sponsorship of All in Sport Consulting’s annual Adapted Sports: Economic Impact Study. This important study seeks to analyze the economic contributions of adapted sports events while shedding light on the broader social impact these events have on communities. One of the goals of providing economic data is to give organizations and leaders in this space a resource to share perspectives on the movement’s economic power. By highlighting the financial benefits and potential for growth, we aim to encourage investment and participation in adapted sports, driving further progress in inclusivity.

One organization, Lakeshore Foundation, successfully utilized the study to engage with business leaders. “Sharing real impact numbers from the Adapted Sport Economic Impact Report provided by All in Sport Consulting helps us create a greater sense of community partnership with other organizations. They are more than just partnerships that advance efforts in adapted sports, research, and performance, they are business partners collaborating in a fast-growing segment of the local economy,” said Amy Rauworth, Lakeshore’s Chief Research and Innovation Officer.

Why Adapted Sports?

Adapted sports provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to participate in athletic events and activities, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment. These sports not only enhance physical health but also promote mental well-being, confidence, and community integration. Through adapted sports, athletes can showcase their talents, challenge societal norms, and motivate others.

We have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of adapted sports events. In the Richmond Region, we’ve hosted events like the National Veterans Wheelchair Games and National Wheelchair Basketball Championships, which have brought together athletes and spectators from across the country. In Tempe, we have organized events such as Paradragons USA Training Camps, including their inaugural Team USA camp and tryouts. These events not only generate substantial economic benefits by attracting participants and spectators but also enrich the cultural fabric of our communities. They encourage local businesses to become more accessible and inclusive, benefiting everyone in the process.

Our Commitment to Accessibility

Our co-sponsorship of the Adapted Sports Economic Impact Study underscores our unwavering commitment to DEIA principles. By supporting this study, we aim to provide valuable insights into the economic and social benefits of adapted sports, encouraging more communities to invest in sports for all.

Through collaborative efforts, we strive to create a more inclusive sports environment where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive. As representatives of Destination Marketing Organizations, it is our responsibility to continue to educate our communities and hospitality partners through training and initiatives to ensure we remain inclusive to all visitors in every way.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, Sports Richmond, VA and Tempe Tourism are dedicated to expanding our efforts in promoting adapted sports and enhancing DEIA across all our initiatives. We believe that by fostering a culture of inclusivity, we can create lasting positive change within our communities and the sports industry at large.

We invite other organizations, community leaders, and individuals to join us in our mission to champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Together, we can create a world where sports are truly accessible to all, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future.
